Trauma-informed workshops grounded in care, culture, and community

What I Offer

Karla Jubaily offers writing and media workshops rooted in community, care, and cultural storytelling. Her services support individuals and organizations in navigating media engagement, processing grief through writing, and telling food stories that honour memory, migration, and identity. Grounded in trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices, Karla is certified in Psychological First Aid (PFA) and is currently completing a Micro-certificate in Mental Health and Substance Use through the University of British Columbia’s School of Social Work. She brings experience from academic and community spaces, having worked in communications and storytelling with UBC’s Faculty of Education, the School of Journalism, and most recently in the non-profit sector with Filipino BC.

  • A facilitated writing space that invites participants to explore grief through storytelling, reflection, and collective care.

Grounded in trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices, this workshop:

    • Uses guided prompts to help participants write through loss, change, and uncertainty

    • Centers emotional safety, consent, choice, and aftercare

    • Honours grief as both personal and collective

    • Creates space for sharing without pressure to perform or disclose

Ideal for: community groups, organizations, and individuals seeking gentle, reflective writing experiences.

  • A hands-on writing workshop that explores food as memory, culture, and storytelling.

    Participants will:

    • Learn how to write about food beyond recipes—centering history, migration, and identity

    • Develop sensory writing skills

    • Explore personal and cultural food narratives

    • Leave with a draft piece they can continue developing for publication or personal archives

Ideal for: emerging writers, creatives, and community members interested in food, culture, and storytelling.

  • An introductory media training designed for community leaders, organizers, creatives, and small organizations navigating interviews, public storytelling, and press engagement.

    This session covers:

    • Speaking with confidence in interviews (print, radio, TV, and digital)

    • Crafting a press release and clear key messages without losing your voice

    • Media ethics, consent, and boundaries—especially when sharing personal or community stories

    • Preparing for sensitive or high-stakes conversations

    • Understanding journalists’ processes and timelines

Ideal for: community advocates, nonprofit staff, artists, and first-time media spokespeople.

My Process

Listening & Context

Every workshop begins with listening. I take time to understand the people, communities, and contexts I’m working with—especially the histories, sensitivities, and power dynamics at play. This ensures the work responds to real needs rather than assumptions.

Preparation

Workshops are thoughtfully designed in collaboration with organizers or participants. I adapt content, pacing, and facilitation styles to meet people where they are, integrating trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices. Clear expectations, consent, and emotional boundaries are established from the start.

Facilitation with Care

I facilitate spaces that prioritize safety, agency, and choice. Whether working with media training, grief writing, or food storytelling, participants are invited—not pressured—to share. The focus is on skill-building, reflection, and connection.

Reflection & Aftercare

Care doesn’t end when a workshop does. I build in time for reflection and offer gentle aftercare to support participants as they process what comes up. This may include grounding exercises, written reflections, optional resource-sharing, and clear pathways for continued support. Participants are never required to share more than they wish, and follow-up is shaped by consent, capacity, and care.
